Continuing Education programs promote continuing development of expertise and skills.
To support AASDN's commitment to dissemination of sound, scientific information to the public, maintaining the Nutrition Specialist credential includes the following continuing education policies:

CECs will be awarded only for activities that are completed within the reporting period. CECs in excess of the amount required cannot be carried over for credit in subsequent reporting periods. CECs cannot be earned prior to certification.
•Continuing education content must fall within the following Domains
•Category 1: The Science of Nutrition (biochemistry; energy nutrient utilization during exercise, rest, illness; alternative medicine; nutrition and disease, etc);
•Category 2: Incorporating nutrition programs - in conjunction with fitness programming (legal terms; adult, youth, aging, athletes, vegetarian programs; stress reduction; exercise; entrepreneurial skills)

Recertification Policies

The purpose of recertification is to ensure that qualified professionals maintain and enhance levels of proficiency in their related fields through continuing education requirements. CEC programs promote continuing development of expertise and skills.
To support AASDN's commitment to dissemination of sound, scientific information to the public, maintaining the Nutrition Specialist certification includes the following policies.
•AASDN requires recertification of the Nutrition Specialist certification every two years. All Nutrition Specialists are expected to obtain the required 15 contact hours every two years. The current reporting period begins January 1st, 2010 and ends December 31st, 2012.
•AASDN-BOC has instituted a random audit whereby only 10% of all Nutrition Specialists will be asked to provide documentation of contact hours. No fees are associated with this process. Certificants that are chosen will be notified via USPS and must show proof of contact hours within 60 days of notification.
•All other Nutrition Specialists will NOT be required to submit documentation of contact hours, but are required to complete the AASDN-BOC Recertification Documentation Form and maintain a copy for their records.
•All Nutrition Specialists are required to renew their Nutrition Specialist Certification annually
•All Nutrition Specialists have the option to upgrade to the Nutrition Manager Membership at any time. This option includes the ability to work with more diversified populations and provide more specialized services. Your AASDN sports dietitian not only answers all your questions, but also provides monitoring of client programs. For more details on this membership see Nutrition Manager.
Continuing Education Provider Program
The AASDN-BOC Continuing Education Provider Program is designed to provide continuing education opportunities to those certified by the AASDN-BOC certification program through a variety of sources, which support AASDN’s superior standards. The CEC Provider Program also offers promotional assistance to those who provide the educational event or resource.
Through participation in the AASDN-BOC CEC Provider Program, providers can separate their programs from the countless choices available in the nutrition and fitness industry.
Demand for CECs
AASDN Nutrition Specialists are required to obtain 15 contact hours every two years. One contact hour is equivalent to 1 CEC. CECs are based on the number of actual contack hours undertaken to complete an activity (not included are breaks, lunch breaks, social times, registration, etc.).
Provider Benefits
The AASDN-BOC CEC Provider Program is a powerful marketing tool for reaching a wide range of professionals. As a CEC provider you will receive several important benefits that can contribute to the success of your event/activity. First, receiving CEC approval from AASDN-BOC increases the stature of your organization because it signifies that your organization meets the stringent standards for continuing education. Second, Nutrition Specialist credential holders seek CEC approved events/activities during each two-year period. Third, AASDN-BOC assists with the promotion of your organization in the listing of all approved CEC Providers that appear in the CEC Calendar on the AASDN.org website. Fourth, once your organization is approved by the AASDN-BOC, providers are eligible to use the CEC Provider Logo to promote your organization.
The AASDN-BOC approves providers of continuing education activities, not individual courses. Approval is granted annually and covers attendance courses offered by the provider that meet AASDN-BOC continuing education guidelines, the Professional Code of Conduct and Scope of Practice. Approval requires that there be at least one pending program for the upcoming term. Home study courses are approved on an individual basis under a separate application.
