The American Academy of Sports Dietitians and Nutritionists (AASDN) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2001 in response to the need for differentiating between clinical, licensed nutrition professionals and wellness/sports related professionals. The mission of AASDN is to disseminate accurate, sound, scientific wellness information by qualified individuals.

About AASDN

Dr. Jane Pentz, founder of the nonprofit organization American Academy of Dietitians and Nutritionists (AASDN) and the Nutrition Specialist program, received her undergraduate degree in nutritional biochemistry from Vassar College. Her education continued at Tufts University where she received her Masters and Ph.D. degrees in nutritional biochemistry.

After 10 years in the industry, Dr. Pentz and several colleagues established AASDN (2001) in response to the need for differentiating between clinical, licensed nutrition professionals and wellness/sports related nutrition professionals. The mission of AASDN is to disseminate accurate, sound, scientific wellness information by qualified individuals.

In 2005 AASDN created the AASDN Credentialing Commission as the credentialing body for the newly created Nutrition Specialist Certification.  The Nutrition Specialist Certification Program was created for health, allied health and fitness/wellness professionals who wish to incorporate a nutrition component into their wellness programming. AASDN Nutrition Specialist programs adhere to state licensure laws and ADA guidelines.  AASDN Nutrition Specialist Certification is the only nutrition certification to offer scripted programs, all documents needed to immediately incorporate a nutrition program and unlimited sports dietitian support thereby providing safe, effective and legal programs to the public.

The Nutrition Manager Program, also created in 2005 allows Nutrition Specialists to work with more diversified populations and provide specialized services by working directly with an AASDN Sports Dietitian.

In 2009 AASDN partnered with the USDA / Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion.  As a community partner, AASDN is committed to establishing programs that promote physical fitness and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

To further our commitment as a USDA/CNPP partner AASDN has established:

The comprehensive pre-collegiate Sports Nutrition Certificate program was established in 2010 for individuals wishing to teach sports nutrition in the fitness venue. Application is open to graduates of the Nutrition Specialist Certification (or equivalent program).

In 2011, during a 6 month sabbatical, Dr. Pentz and co-author, Doug Dwyer, published a young adult novel with a purpose. No – Book one of the 8th Day Mystery Series deals with the timeliest of issues – obesity and health related diseases in young children.  This first novel of the 8th Day series inspires and motivates young readers to make healthy school lunch choices.

In January 0f 2012, for the first time in 15 years, the USDA issued new guidelines for school meals.  These new guidelines double the amounts of fruits and vegetables in school lunches and boost offerings of whole grain-rich foods.

AASDN applauds and supports these new efforts through the initiation of the National School Lunch Awareness Initiative. The initiative incorporates a star-associated food rating system through the use of the AASDN Placemats.   These colorful, interactive placemats provides a simple yet effective tool for educating, inspiring and motivating children to make healthy school lunch choices.

AASDN Joins NANA

Center for Science in the Public Interest (www.cspinet.org) advocacy group established the National Alliance for Nutrition and Activity (NANA) Coalition.  The NANA Coalition advocates federal policies and programs to promote healthy eating and physical activity to help reduce the illnesses, disabilities, premature deaths, and costs caused by diet and inactivity-related diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. NANA is made up of more than 300 organizations--steering committee members, national organizations, and state/local organizations. Visit http://www.nanacoaltion.org to view a list of organizations and partners.

AASDN has been invited to join the NANA Coalition and Dr. Jane Pentz of AASDN will be joining the NANA School Foods Subcommittee.  The subcommittee will be working on a “back to school” media campaign highlighting the new school lunch guidelines. These guidelines include a requirement to server more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Congratulations to Dr. Pentz and AASDN for this exciting opportunity.

AASDN NSLAI

In January of 2012, for the first time in 15 years, the USDA issued new guidelines for school lunches and boosts offerings of whole grain-rich foods. The combination of the publication of Dr. Pentz's novel, NO, its impact on inspiring and motivating children to make healthy school lunch choices and the new USDA guidelines lead to the creation of the 2012 AASDN National School Lunch Awareness Initiative and the AASDN Lunch Placemat™.  The AASDN Lunch Placemat™, which incorporates a star rating system, provides a simple yet effective tool for educating, inspiring and motivating children to make healthy school lunch choices.

On November 2nd, 2012 almost 3000 children across the country participated in the “Shoot for 20 Stars Day”.  This first Initiative produced data indicating that the participating children consumed more fruits, vegetables and whole grains as a direct response to the AASDN Placemat.

USF Collaborative Research Project

In direct response to the 2012 NSLAI AASDN is pleased to announce a collaborative research project with The University of South Florida.  The purpose of the project is to determine the impact of the AASDN placemat on the fruit and vegetable intake, self-efficacy and child-asking behavior of 2nd grade school age children attending the Villages, FL Charter School. Click on USF Research for more details.

2013 NSLAI

Your school can get involved by initiating a “Shoot for 20 Stars” day.  See "NSLAI" for details on how you can get involved in helping school aged children make healthier choices at school.

New Interactive Online Nutrition Manager Program

The new online interactive Nutrition Manager Program is now available. These new changes make it possible for Nutrition Managers to offer safer, more effective programs with the ability to work online from any computer, tablet or smart phone. Exciting new changes include:

  • New interactive forms, including client profile, medical release forms and total energy expenditure.
  • New interactive menu plans make producing individualized menu plans as easy as clicking on "drop down lists".  No more time consuming searching for foods.
  • Also new to the program is a new process of menu plan review.  A new online interactive form allows for "submission" of client profiles to Greg in one simple click. Greg will provide advice on clients that have medical conditions.
  • This new submission process will allow Nutrition Managers to work with more diverse populations then previously allowed. After the review process Nutrition Managers will be provided with options on how to proceed. Some disease conditions will require a phone consultation with Greg (see below for membership options).
  •  This submission process is inline with new state licensure laws and ADA guidelines.  More importantly, this new process allows for a safer and more effective program for you and your clients.  Our objective is to provide a higher level of attention to you and your clients, leading to enhanced client results.

Continuing Education Program

Also new are free continuing education courses for all Nutrition Specialists and Nutrition Managers.  See "Continuing Education" for details.
